A manual for the protection of the rights of journalists and activists has been published

Transparency International Bosnia and Herzegovina (TI BiH) has published a “Manual on Protection of the Rights of Journalists and Activists After the Recriminalization of Defamation” intended for journalists and activists, providing tools and guidelines for protecting their rights in light of recent legislative changes that include the recriminalization of defamation. The manual, authored by Aleksandar Jokić and Jovana Kisin Zagajac, lawyers and activists from Banja Luka, deals in detail with issues of prevention and proper response in situations when journalists and activists face legal challenges, especially focusing on new rules and potential threats to freedom of expression.

In the introductory part of the manual, it is pointed out that Bosnia and Herzegovina, especially Republic of Srpska, are facing serious pressure on human rights and freedoms, where freedom of expression is particularly threatened due to changes in the Criminal Code, which now treats defamation as a criminal offense. The manual emphasizes the importance of prevention and adequate response in such circumstances, providing practical advice and instructions so that journalists and activists can better protect themselves.

In addition, the document covers the basics of criminal procedure, important terms, and stages of investigation, offering useful information for journalists and activists on how to navigate the legal system during the proceedings. At the same time, this manual aims to help journalists and activists in understanding the important aspects of the crime of defamation when reporting on personal and family circumstances, and offers various strategies to reduce the risk of legal consequences.

The manual is the result of the cooperation and experience of numerous journalists and legal experts, whose goals are to protect freedom of expression and provide support to journalists and activists in protecting their rights and professional freedom in an increasingly challenging legal environment. With this manual, TI BiH strengthens the capacities of media professionals and activists, ensuring that they have the knowledge and tools needed to protect their rights and continue their important work in promoting transparency and responsibility in society.
