Based on the Transparency International Corruption Perception Index BiH takes 76th place, out of 168 countries, with a score of 38 on the scale from 0 to 100, and it has deteriorated compared to last year, when its score was 39, and it keeps falling on the scale, starting with 2012 when its score was 42.
Sarajevo, 27th January 2016 – Transparency International Bosnia and Herzegovina (TI BiH) presented results of the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) for 2015, in accordance with its practice of ranking countries all around the world regarding the perceived level of corruption in public sector.
Bosnia and Herzegovina obtained a score of 38, on the scale from 0 to 100, whereby 0 is the highest level of the perceived corruption, and 100 the lowest level of corruption, and thus BiH found itself on 76th place, out of 168 countries included in this research. BiH deteriorated compared to the last year, when it scored 39, and it was also obvious that it has been falling on the scale since 2012 when its score was 42.
Once again BiH is placed behind Croatia (score 51 and 50th place), Montenegro (score 44 and 61st place), Macedonia (score 42 and 66th place) and Serbia (score 40 and 71st place), and when observing the region of former Yugoslavia, only Kosovo is placed behind BiH (score 33 and 103rd place).
During the presentation TI BiH said that the setback of BiH was completely expected, taking into consideration the ineffectiveness of the fight against corruption in all segments: law enforcement agencies were ineffective and not mutually coordinated; statistical data of corruption processing were devastating; there was no effective control over financing political parties or property records; in recent years there was a complete lack of the implementation of the law on conflict of interest at BiH, FBiH and BD level; no effective prevention of corruption in public procurement was provided. Furthermore, government at all levels was constantly trying to establish full control over the work of independent institutions and to entirely politicized public administration.
Srdjan Blagovcanin, Chairman of the TI BiH Board of Directors, emphasized that the current situation was absolutely unsustainable, and that the widespread corruption led to the complete collapse of institutions and losses for the citizens and the country, measured in millions of marks. „TI BiH urges the BiH government, as well as the EU and the international community to take the corruption issue in the country seriously and to support the fight against corruption, because it seriously threatens to completely destabilize the country and cause the escalation of conflicts and social unrests“, said Blagovcanin.
