Responsibility 2015

The Accountability 2015 project will aim at monitoring the integrity and accountability of public officials and holding them accountable towards citizens, through identifying potential cases of abuses of public office or conflict of interests. Considering that previous analyses showed legal loopholes that enable public officials to lawfully misuse the public office and be in conflict of interests, the focus of the project will be identifying the practices of institutions and public officials that are not banned or sanctioned by the relevant legislation, but still undermine the integrity and accountability, or enable the personal gain of public officials.

This will be achieved through in-depth research in three areas:

  • The positions that officials who are not covered by the Law on Conflict of Interests are holding, with the aim to detect possible conflicting positions.
  • The contracts between public and private companies.
  • Employment in public institutions, in order to detect possible cases of nepotism.

The collected information will be analysed and data-based, and made public through the data-base, and individual reports and stories on identified practices and cases. They will also be promoted through an online campaign, infographics and a video story, while focusing on necessary improvements to the legislation that can prevent these practices. The identified practices will also lead to specific recommendations for legislation improvements, that will be advocated towards relevant institutions.
