A situation where powerful individuals, institutions, companies or groups, inside or outside the country, use corruption to shape state policy, legal framework, and economics for the benefit of their own private interests.
Since 1990, multinational corporations have allegedly bribed and pressured key Solomon Islands politicians to create a favorable environment for the wood industry, and weaken the management of state-level wood resources, successfully gaining advantages such as export tax cuts, delaying bans on exports and preventing moves that would strengthen the government’s oversight of procedures.
