Albania Officials Arrested for Corruption

24 Decembra 2009

The arrest came after a four month long investigation from the Tirana Joint Investigative Unit to Fight Economic Crime and Corruption. According to prosecutors, the three officials were seeking a five to ten per cent of the procurement notice for a tender on police boots valued at 120.000 euro.

The Tirana Joint Investigative Unit to Fight Economic Crime and Corruption, which includes prosecutors, police officers, intelligence, customs and tax officials, began two years ago with the assistance of a US-funded OPDAT programme in support of the Albanian justice system.

The success of this unit has not only been a model for Albania but for other regional states as well. Montenegro has organized a new taskforce of prosecutors and police using the Albanian unit as a model.

Because of the success of the programme, general prosecutor Ina Rama recently established regional joint investigative units with US aid in Vlore, Fier, Korce, Gjirokaster, Durres, and Shkoder.
